A house with a full basement on a sloping plot, which is the most demanding version of a private residence we build. The basement is a tanked box: raft slab, retaining walls poured against a blinding layer, membrane on the outer face and a crystalline coat inside.

Everything below ground was photographed at every stage and the ponding test was witnessed by the owner before backfilling. Three monsoons on, the basement is dry.

What was difficult
Water was struck at 2.6 m, half a metre above the raft level. We dewatered continuously for nineteen days through two well points, cast in shorter bays than planned, and absorbed the extra pumping cost because the trial pit had been ours.
